Environment Department

The New Mexico Environment Department is a very diverse organization. Its mission is to provide the highest quality of life throughout the state by promoting a safe, clean and productive environment.

There are about 650 workers in the department located in various parts of the state. Some are members of the administrative staff others are members of the technical staff. The majority of the staff is covered by the union. The State is divided into five districts. The main offices are in Santa Fe. We cover the State through our highly dedicated staff in Santa Fe and from the other four field districts.

The programs we serve include, Air Quality and Air Monitoring, Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA), Petroleum Storage Tank, Food Program, Drinking Water Quality, Ground Water Quality, Surface Water Quality, Hazardous Waste Management, Liquid Waste Management, Solid Waste and Landfill Programs, Department of Energy (DOE) Oversight, Radiation Protection, Construction Programs and Green Zia Excellence Award Program.

Our goal is to preserve and protect our environment for us and our future generations. That is why we monitor the air you breathe, the water you drink, the food you eat, and the waste you generate so as to keep our environment clean.
