NMFL, AFL-CIO Endorsement Throws Labor’s Weight
Behind Lt. Governor Diane Denish and Brian Colon
162,000 plus Members Statewide Mobilize to Get Out the Labor Vote for Lt. Governor Diane Denish and Brian Colón
In a unanimous vote at the NMFL, AFL-CIO’s Committee on Political Education Convention in Las Cruces, the delegates voted to endorse Lt. Governor Diane Denish and Brian Colón for the positions of Governor and Lt. Governor of New Mexico. The 162.000 member organization is immediately starting a statewide campaign on behalf of the endorsed candidates.
Lt. Governor Denish accepted the endorsement stating: "I look forward to the hard work ahead with all of you by my side and on my side. Together we will fight to create good-paying jobs to help New Mexico's working families get through these tough times.”
Brian Colon remarked, “I want the opportunity to represent all of New Mexico’s working families. Job creation is top on our list of “to do’s”. In addition, we must give our schools the necessary resources to ensure that every child has the opportunity to graduate, we must invest in our people to create a well-prepared workforce. That is crucial in moving New Mexico forward.
Christine Trujillo, NMFL, AFL-CIO’s State President, issued the following statement on the group's endorsement:
"Our members' endorsement of Lt. Governor Denish and Brian Colón clearly indicates that we can only support candidates that inspire hope and have a concrete template to move the state forward. We do not need politicians who strike fear in the hearts of the poor, the jobless and those without healthcare. We need a Governor who will provide the strong leadership and vision required to create high-paying jobs and green jobs for New Mexicans. We need someone who actually has a plan to deal with the economic crisis in New Mexico. The challenges are enormous and will require someone who is willing to bring stakeholders to the table to construct that change in a proactive way.”
"Mobilizing our electorate is the key to bringing that positive change to New Mexico. The Denish-Colón ticket has our members fired up and ready to go on that front,” stated Maxine Velasquez, NMFL, AFL-CIO Treasurer and AFSCME member.

We also wish to thank Congressmen Martin Heinrich, Harry Teague and Ben Ray Lujan for their contributions and their ongoing engagement with our members. We're looking forward to working together to bring progressive values to Santa Fe and New Mexico, “added Jon Hendry, Chairman of the COPE/Legislative Committee of the NMFL, AFL-CIO.
